The story behind the mural…
Designed by 14 children and young people from the local area, this mural is based on their ideas about what this area and Valley Street community centre means to them.
During a workshop on 20th July 2024, the group came together to share ideas and try out spray paints and stencils. Head into the community centre to say hello, and you’ll also find their butterfly installation proudly displayed in the entrance on the right.
Painted by Butterfly Effect(ed) and designed by 14 local children and young people…

Statement from the artist, Hayley Garner of Butterfly Effect(ed):
“This mural is all about empowerment, feeling at home, safety, community, peace, and calm. At the centre is a young girl, symbolizing strength and potential. She’s holding an umbrella that protects her from adversity, showing safety and protection. Her backpack is full of paintbrushes and pencils, highlighting how creativity and education can help us grow personally and as a community.
An open book flying into the distance represents the endless possibilities that come from knowledge and imagination, inspiring a lifelong journey of learning and discovery. A white dove flies gracefully over her shoulder, symbolizing the calm and peace we all seek in our community.”
