Carla’s Story

My name is Carla. I am 49 years old and have been living at Calico’s supported living property for the past three years. Since moving into my new house, I’ve discovered a sense of freedom and a sense of community. Despite facing difficult and abusive relationships, mobility issues and battling anxiety, my journey has led me to have peace and a safe secure environment.

I face mobility issues daily and rely on a walking aid, I require care and support most of the time. Additionally, I struggle with anxiety and epilepsy. Despite these challenges, I remain resilient and determined to live life to the fullest.

Prior to moving to my new home provided by Calico Homes, I experienced difficulties in relationships with violent ex partners, which had a negative influence on my mental and physical health. I subsequently found safety in my families house, where my parents and daughter helped me daily, but due to my mobility challenges, I needed more care and assistance, as well as a place of my own to call home. It was time to go on after experiencing challenges in the family home setting. With the help of my social worker, I found a new home, a bungalow with care professionals on-site 24 hours a day. I was both excited and nervous. I had never lived on my own before and had no idea what to expect; transitioning to my new home was a big step for me, but this was suitable and independent living for me. With the support of carers, I embraced my new home and have made Progress.

I started enjoying my home, felt easy and comfortable with the company of the staff supporting me, I felt safe and cared for. I have built strong relationships with the care staff who are very encouraging and supportive and have formed an understanding and bond with my neighbours and actively participates in community activities, such as the luncheon club.

Affinity Care Service and Calico Homes have played a crucial role in providing a suitable home and care which has been empowering. Calico Homes takes care of my repairs to my home, and Affinity cares for my support needs; with their help, I feel secure and empowered
to manage my everyday life independently. This is my home now and I would never consider moving back to my family home or living anywhere else because I feel supported and valued and part of a community.

I have many dreams and I hope to be swimming with dolphins and Orca whales one day and want to attempt tap dancing. I love animals and enjoy watching nature documentaries on TV.

I wanted to share my story, allowing others to be motivated from my experiences. I hope to inspire others to embrace their journey and seek joy in every moment.

“If you are in my shoes, get help from whoever you are close to and enjoy living in a home like mine”.
“Just try your best to get help from others, don’t be scared, talk to other people around you who can help you be strong”.
