James S’s Story

I met the girl of my dreams at 21 and moved to Blackpool.

I spent 15 years as happy as I could be in a town I came to call home.

I lost a close relative in a short period of time just before lockdown and found myself in crisis. I was in a job where I wanted nothing more than to help relieve others pain and struggles and found myself neglecting my own problems and creating problems for those closest to me.

It was a day during lockdown I caught myself planning my own death on the way to work to help those also in crisis. I was assist trained as a result of the job I chose and I realised what was happening. Trauma is a strange thing and it’s different for everyone, what might be traumatic for some isn’t for others. I’ve learned with the support of those I still love to be kind to myself and to try to be kind to others too. I’m not perfect and I still make mistakes but I know life is precious, those that love us, truly love us, do so unconditionally and there’s always some to talk things through with no matter how hard things seem.

We’re the product of our circumstance but that doesn’t define us! We all have a choice and there’s always a new start each day. Be kind to ourselves and others and things begin to make sense.

I’m now in a position where I’m happy and carving out a new path, it’s sometimes scary but ultimately, we only get one life. I’ve found love and acceptance and it’s been life changing!

Never give up! Be kind to yourself! Things get better x
